Our beloved Roanoke has a rich history of supporting the arts, whether it be visual, musical or performance. Incredible museums like the Taubman, quirky music venues, stately theatres and independent galleries all await you for a dose of culture, social distanced style.

Here are just a few of the ways you can enjoy and support the arts in our community this winter.

Taubman Museum

This is without a doubt one of downtown Roanoke’s most treasured gems.  Boasting 11 galleries and 15-20 changing exhibitions a year, you are sure to enjoy strolling through and soaking up all that it has to offer.   The hours have been adjusted and procedures have been placed to accommodate guests in a safe manner.   Be sure to check the website for the latest info to plan your visit.

Roanoke Symphony Orchestra

Enjoy the sounds of the symphony from the comfort of your own home courtesy of virtual concerts.  Holiday Pops from the Vault is just one way to sit back and lose yourself in the wave of music.  This program features a full choir, orchestra guest solo but an American idol and even an elf rocking an electric guitar.  What more could you want?

Grandin Theatre

The oldest theatre in Roanoke is showing some great classics at a capped capacity for safety.  Planes, Trains and Automobiles and The Muppets Take Manhattan will grace the big screen just to name a few in the holiday line up.   If you are unsure about going out to see a show, check out their selection of movies available for streaming.  You can recreate the theatre mood with a comfy couch and some extra buttery popcorn.  Throw in a few Junior Mints and you are all set for a couple hours of blissful  escape.

Art by Bike

When the weather is mild, grab your bike for a pedaling tour featuring fresh air and art.  This self guided route is the perfect way to get in some culture and exercise and an introduction to our cities incredible public art.  There are two routes available, one that is a leisurely 7 miles and another that is 11 miles.   The routes are available to be downloaded in a variety of ways to ensure you can spend time with the scenery rather than stressing about where to turn next.

Independent Galleries

Galleries are what makes the visual art world go round and they certainly have had their challenges this year!  Indulge a big art budget or a small one by visiting one of the many galleries Roanoke has to offer.  You can even browse them all at during the Art by Night event held every First Friday.  If you’d like to pursue art in a more solitary fashion, check out the websites of your favorites for open hours or appointment times.   You will be not only supporting your local gallery but also the artists from all over the country who create the art.  There’s nothing like art to transform a space and guarantee a smile every time you walk into the room!

During the downtime this holiday season don’t forget to try your hand at a little creativity on your own.  Get out the camera and capture nature, sketch out a few ideas or prepare a culinary masterpiece.  Art is good for the soul!
