Roanoke-area Activities to Keep You Occupied this Autumn

You might not be ready to shut the door on summertime quite yet. After all, what’s not to love about lazy days at the pool and dining al fresco?

The good news is that fall in Roanoke brings a whole line up of great opportunities for enjoying the cooler weather. We’ve picked five must-do bucket list activities to ease into all the season has to offer. Stash the pool noodles, and pull out the jackets—it’s time to enjoy fall!

Carve a pumpkin, you know you want to. It’s a favorite for kids of all ages, and roasted pumpkin seeds make a great snack. Roanoke and surrounding locales have great destination orchards and patches, where you can pick out your perfect pumpkin and a few pecks of apples while you’re there.

Speaking of apples, you really must make an apple treat. A few minutes of searching Pinterest is all you’ll need to find inspiration and recipes that will make getting an apple a day as easy as apple pie. If your schedule doesn’t allow for an afternoon of you-pick, you can find many fresh varieties at the Farmer’s Market. Store your apples loosely in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel to keep them fresh and delicious.

Take a hike! The drop in temperature means you can hike for hours, enjoying the beautiful scenery without breaking a sweat. For a casual but gorgeous destination, head to Roanoke Mountain. The 4-mile hike is enough to burn off a few of those apple treats but leave you with enough energy to enjoy plenty of Roanoke nightlife activities. There are also plenty of more rigorous hikes in the area, if you’re feeling up to an adventure.

Try a pumpkin spiced…… Nah. Dodge the pumpkin latte, and head instead for a fall-inspired beer. Roanoke is full of great breweries that offer rotating taps, so go try a few, and see which one you like best. You can pair music and seasonal beer selections at many of the venues to make the evening even more fun!

Go see a show. Summer is all about sitting on a blanket and listening to an outdoor concert, but when the weather turns, there’s nothing nicer than being transported to another world through live theater. The Broadway in Roanoke series at the Berglund Center might just fit the bill, and Mill Mountain Theatre has a great fall line up, as well. Be sure to check out the offerings and buy your tickets now, as many of these shows will sell out fast!.

Roanoke is a great place to call home, no matter what the season. Try something new, keep a few old favorites, and most of all, enjoy every minute!
