Valentine’s Date Ideas for Local Romantics

Ah February…the most romantic month! Valentine’s Day may have become the ultimate “Hallmark holiday,” with its focus on sappy sentiment and the ubiquitous pink and red hearts decorating every storefront. With that said, it’s still a nice time to show the important people in your life how much you care. If you’re looking for something that’ll really make an impact this year, here’s our advice: skip the flowers and chocolates. Instead, give your sweetheart the gift of an experience together—they’ll remember it forever! Below are some of our favorite Roanoke date ideas (and here’s a hint: they’re fun to do with friends, too):

Visit a Winery.

There’s a reason wine and love go so well together. Several studies have indicated that wine—red wine, especially—contains aphrodisiac qualities. Combine this with expertly paired dishes and the breathtaking Roanoke Valley views, and you’ve just created an unforgettable Valentine’s experience! (P.S. We HEART Uber and designated drivers!)

  • February 11 & 12: Chateau Morrisette
Rev up to the main event with Wine & Chocolate, where select wines will be paired with sweet and savory chocolates and chocolate-tinged amuse bouches.
  • February 14: Beliveau Estate Winery
Join the folks at Beliveau Winery for Valentine Wine and Tapas: four courses, each paired perfectly with a Beliveau wine.

Do Dinner and a Show.

With so many incredible local restaurants and theaters in town, the only problem with this one is narrowing down your options!

  • Take a stroll through downtown Roanoke and pop into any of the amazing local, farm-to-table eateries before or after your show. Lucky is one of our favorites, located conveniently on Kirk Avenue, with tons of romantic ambience. If you’re planning your date for Valentine’s evening, just be sure to call ahead and make reservations, as many places will fill up fast!
  • February 11: Roanoke Ballet Theatre
What’s more romantic than the ballet? Catch a 30 minute performance for only $5 as Roanoke Ballet Theatre presents its Black Box Series, highlighting both classical and contemporary works to show the versatility of modern dance.
  • February 12: Barrel Chest Wine & Beer
Get your entertainment and your eats all at once with “A Valentine Murder Mystery Event!” $30/person includes the mystery event and light appetizers, and you can purchase food and drink at the bar. In the meantime, watch the murder mystery unfold as you bribe, blackmail, and question others to solve clues and get answers.
  • Weekly, Fridays: No Shame Theatre, The Cave (Salem)
Feel like impressing the pants off your date? Step onto the stage at No Shame Theatre in Salem, and wow them with an original act!

Get artsy.

Creativity and romance go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re showing off your skills, or just your artistic knowledge, you’ll be sure to impress your love with any of these inspiring dates:

  • February 10: Taubman Museum of Art
Get into the Valentine’s mood by creating a handmade Valentine masterpiece at the Valentine Workshop. The Taubman staff will demonstrate both traditional and modern techniques, to suit even the pickiest of tastes.
  • Various Dates: PaintNite
Feel like exercising your creative talents? At one of PaintNite’s Date Nites, you and your amour will create matching, romantic paintings to take home.

A few more random, romantic ideas:

  • Visit Grandin Village for a quaint, historic Valentine’s experience. Check out the delicious local restaurants, and be sure to see what’s playing at the Grandin Theatre.
  • Wander around your favorite bookstore or library together. Pick out a book you both love, snuggle up on a couch somewhere and read out loud to each other.
  • It’s been so warm this winter, you can drive or even hike up to the Roanoke Star at twilight, and gaze out at the beauty of the twinkling city lights below. Take along a blanket to wrap up in and a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy once you make it to the top!
  • Meander through the Roanoke Valley Greenways to get in some sightseeing and nature-watching.
  • Center in the Square isn’t just for kids…bond with your date while rediscovering your childlike sense of wonder at the 80s arcade or Pinball museum.

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Gramercy Row!
